Sunday Ride 25-05-25 - Airport NRC
ADVISORY
There's a known problem with the display of the routes of as of Monday evening (May 19).
Some speed options are not being displayed correctly on the event page. Nonetheless, you are still able to register yourself for the correct speeds, even though all speeds are not listed on this page for each ride. We have identified the problem and a fix is forthcoming.
Here is a summary of available speeds for the routes:
A: 25-27 / 28-30 / 31-33 / 34+
B: 22-24 / 25-27 / 28-30
C: 22-24 / 25-27
D: 20-22 / 22-24
Upcoming Club Events:
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Please take a look in club calendar to see what upcoming events you may wish to take part in. There is something going on almost every day, and new, recurring activities are still coming on-line for the season.
Weeks until RLCT : 4! Registration closes on June 1.
Also remember that many many volunteers are needed for the RLCT to function. Even if only for a couple of hours and whether or not you are riding the tour.
Please tap the Volunteer button on the tour website to see how you can help out.

REMINDERS FOR RIDERS:
Group ride participajnts must have previously attended an OBC Group Riding Clinic (GRC).
Check the calendar to see when the next GRC is scheduled.
Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to other road users.
Keep an eye out for trash, rocks, sand, gravel, etc. on the roads, especially rounding corners. It's unlikely that the street sweepers will be out tout de suite, so Spring requires special attention to the road surface.
Sunday Ride
LAUNCH TIME REMAINS AT 9:00 AM THIS WEEK
The plan is to advance to 8:00 AM once the consistently warmer weather arrives. Keep an eye out!
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Description : Road Ride
Start Location : Airport (NRC)
Start Time : 9:00 AM Departure - gather 8:30 -- 8:45
If you haven't arranged yet your riding companions for Rideau Lakes, no time like the present! Start asking around in your groups; just say that you are looking for company. Strongly suggest not saying: "I need a Sherpa to carry me".
This week we head south again.
Ride lengths may be a little further extended over the coming weeks but not too much from what is presented this week.
When it seems to make sense, I am adding an additional (slower) pace to longer rides. Send me an email if you know of a few people that want a slower pace added for a longer ride; remember, though, that every group needs a ride leader.
Bonne route!
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Sorry, registration closed.
Available Rides
A (131 km, 479 m elevation gain)
Trying to find some pleasant, new roads leads today's route to travel south between Metcalfe and Russell, before looping around through Morewood on the way to Winchester, your planned coffee stop. I recommend having a look at the map ahead of time to choose a likely establishment for food and water. From there, head SW to South Mountain from where you begin the long road north. May your winds be light.
B (100 km, 373 m elevation gain)
Heading to, what is for the Bs, the Deep South. That's Winchester. Lots of very pleasant roads on the way out. A little busier on the return.
Suggest a refreshment break in Winchester. If an earlier stop is needed, head into Metcalfe although the restroom is at The Stable resto very near to Bank St on Victoria St, so that will add a few kms. On the return, you could also swing by Osgoode, which will add a couple more kms. Make sure you have a look a the map ahead of time to know where to turn to get to those places. Metcalfe = turn right from 9th Line onto Victoria St. Osgoode = left turn off of Stagecoach onto Dalmeny Rd.
C (78 km, 404 m elevation gain)
A clockwise loop to Metcalfe then Osgoode. Suggest a rest stop in the grocery store plaza in Osgoode. Also a cafe with ice cream. Check the map and cues as it is slightly off the route.
D (54 km, 304 m elevation gain)
Rider leaders, please note variations (described at end). A very pleasant stretch of rail trail -- about 11km in length -- awaits the Dauntless Ds. The path is good for any bike and tire except, perhaps, the extremely narrow (23?) variety. The trail is very smooth and a welcome change from Manotick Station Rd, which it roughly parallels, and allows you to relax that much more. Maybe listen to birds. Get held up by a bear (best carry grubs and honey to pay the ransom). Who knows what may happen. The route turns for home at Kars -- with the option to stop at the Ultramar station for a break -- and swings back through Manotick, an even better spot for coffee.
RIDE LEADER NOTES:
1) The rail trail can be avoided (but why?) by continuing south on Manotick Stn Rd to Snake Island, then turn right.
2) If needed, an early coffee/ comfort stop can be had at the Ultramar station on Roger Stephens Dr (noted in the cues)
3) If desired, the route can be shorted by a coupla kms by turning right on Rideau Valley Dr; good road with a good shoulder (the first right after crossing the bridge)
4) the exit out of Manotick can easily be the usual -- heading east on Mitch Owens with a left turn onto Spratt -- but, to maximize joy, I recommend the route as drawn. It includes another 100m of stone dust trail which is very pleasant. Note the funny little "jug handle" I've drawn for the left turn from Bridge St onto Long Island Rd. That is just in case Bridge St is very busy; it makes the turn less anxious.
