Sunday Ride 25-06-01 - Orleans
ADVISORY
Fortunately, though just by chance, your RM was riding out of Orleans, today (Tuesday), and discovered a roadwork detour that affects the A, C, and D rides. New routes have been created to include the detour. If you downloaded the previous version, please delete it and download the new route. FYI, the detour will start at this point (see link) and involves a couple of exciting downhills, a park with portapotty and a dodgy back road (David St, exiting Rockland) that will require your attention. Adventure awaits!

Upcoming Club Events:
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Please take a look in club calendar to see what upcoming events you may wish to take part in. There is something going on almost every day, and new, recurring activities are still coming on-line for the season.
Weeks until RLCT : 3! Registration closes on June 1.
If you haven't arranged yet your riding companions for Rideau Lakes, no time like the present! Start asking around in your groups; just say that you are looking for company. Strongly suggest not saying: "I may need a Sherpa to carry me"!
Also remember that many many volunteers are needed for the RLCT to function. Even if only for a couple of hours and whether or not you are riding the tour.
Please tap the Volunteer button on the tour website to see how you can help out. Seriously, if you have even a couple of hours. Thanks!

REMINDERS FOR RIDERS:
Group ride participajnts must have previously attended an OBC Group Riding Clinic (GRC).
Check the calendar to see when the next GRC is scheduled.
Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to other road users.
Sunday Ride
***LAUNCH TIME CHANGE TO 8:00 AM ***
***NEW LAUNCH LOCATION***
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Description : Road Ride
Start Location : Orleans, Millennium Park n Ride (new location for Orleans rides)
Start Time : 8:00 AM Departure - gather 7:30 -- 7:45
NOTE: FOR FERRIES
A RIDERS BRING 1 x $2.00 + 1 x $3.00 = $5.00
B, C, D RIDERS BRING 2 x $2.00 = $4.00
This week we head across the river into Quebec (Remember: single-file only). Your choice to either swim the river, twice -- no charge -- or take two ferries. Each of the two ferries costs $2.00 per bike/rider EXCEPT Montebello ferry is $3.00.
There are numerous roads in Quebec that are quite scenic and not too busy. There are hills (make note of the ride elevation number) on several routes (not so much today's D route; it's relatively flat). The A ride also travels the very scenic and calm riverside road east to Lefaivre.
With longer routes, I am adding an additional (slower) pace to longer rides when it makes sense. Send me an email if you know of a few people that want a slower pace added for a longer ride; remember, though, that every group needs a ride leader.
Bonne route!
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Available Rides
A (123 km, 677 m elevation gain)
A good counter-clockwise loop out on the Ontario side to Lefaivre, then cross the river to Montebello. Returning on the 148. It's a very pleasant, no busy at all ride east on the Ontario side.
A new route has been created to include a necessary detour. It's all good but note the km or so on David Street, exiting Rockland, is strewn with potholes; be very attentive.
$3.00 for the Montebello ferry.
$2.00 for the return ferry.
On the 148, do watch out for uneven pavement on the shoulder. You should not have to worry about shrubbery shadows on the pavement when heading west.
An easy 6km can be added at km 41.8 by continuing on Old Montreal Rd to Plantagenet -- stop for tea or gelato, if you like, by the river -- then continuing past and crossing hwy 17 a second time onto Cty Rd 9 north to the river to rejoin the route.
There's a depanneur in Lefaivre (no intel on it). Montebello has lots of cafes on the hwy through town. Papineauville km75 has a Timmy's at the far end. Thurso has Subway, ice cream, Metro.
B (95 km, 586 m elevation gain)
An extended loop on the Ontario side awaits before boarding the ferry. Save some energy for the climbing, mostly on the Quebec side, where you'll climb up to find a pleasant country road heading west before starting a long descent back to the river for the return crossing. Be sure to hop onto the pathway upon exiting Buckingham; it avoids a nasty stretch of very busy hwy.
You have 3 obvious spots to stop (preview in RWGPS): Bourget (36km) food store; Thurso (km 58); Buckingham (km 77.5).
C (71 km, 548 m elevation gain)
A slightly shorter C ride, but with additional climbing today. This route, or variations of it, has become a bit of a classic over the last two years. The biggest single climb is after the arrival of the Ferry in Thurso, but it's not bad. The climb is followed by a very pleasant country road over rolling hills. Once that's done, it's almost literally 14km downhill to the second ferry.
A new route has been created to include a necessary detour. It's all good but note the km or so on David Street, exiting Rockland, is strewn with potholes; be very attentive.
Two obvious places to take a break. In Thurso and/or in Buckingham. Take a look at the map for the locations. Ice cream, Subway and grocery store are found in both locales.
D (61 km, 394 m elevation gain)
A pleasant ride along Wilhaven Dr starts you heading east. On the Quebec side, you follow the 148, which has a good shoulder; just be watchful for any dips/ holes in the pavement. Also note the routing necessary to turn off of the 148 to head south to the return ferry.
A new route has been created to include a necessary detour. It's all good but note the km or so on David Street, exiting Rockland, is strewn with potholes; be very attentive. Watch also for two substantial downhills.
One obvious place to take a break - in Thurso. Take a look at the map for the locations. Ice cream, Subway and grocery store are all nearby each other.
