Sunday Ride 25-06-15 - Parc Moussette
Upcoming Club Events:
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Please take a look in club calendar to see what upcoming events you may wish to take part in. There is something going on almost every day, and new, recurring activities are still coming on-line for the season.
Weeks until RLCT : 1! Registration is now closed.
No Sunday ride next week.
If you haven't arranged yet your riding companions for Rideau Lakes, no time like the present! Start asking around in your groups; just say that you are looking for company.
Please consider volunteering.
Many many volunteers are needed for the RLCT to function. Even if only for a couple of hours and whether or not you are riding the tour.
Please tap the Volunteer button on the tour website to see how you can help out. Seriously, if you have even a couple of hours. Thanks!

Are you interested in having GPS voice navigation on your group rides?
If you want to keep track of your rides, as you go, join the exciting world of being told where to go by an ethereal voice!
Every OBC member is entitled to use the Ride With GPS tool, at no cost, for any route that is found in the OBC's RWGPS route library. (Whether or not you are on a club ride).
Access this document to get specific instructions on how.
REMINDERS FOR RIDERS:
Group ride participants must have previously attended an OBC Group Riding Clinic (GRC).
Check the calendar to see when the next GRC is scheduled.
Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to other road users.
Sunday Ride

Description : Road Ride
Start Location : PARC MOUSSETTE, GATINEAU
Start Time : 8:00 AM Departure - gather 7:30 -- 7:45
Heading, once more into the Quebec paysage. Hills for all, to varying degrees. And great scenery!
NOTE 1: A & B riders, as a result of an OBC member scouting the route today (Thursday), and determining that the loop to Buckingham is, indeed, very scenic, please note new cautions will be added to the RWGPS routes. Please re-download the route to get the final version and note on the map the CAUTION points-of-interest.
NOTE 2: There was a recent report of Quebec police ticketing a group of cyclists, in Chelsea, for not having proper reflectors on their bikes. This is an ongoing possibility which, in my experience, rarely actually occurs. I have no idea as to the reasons why the police stopped the cyclists. It is up to you what reflectors you install/wear. I just want to make you aware that if the police issue tickets, it can get expensive. I have ordered some inexpensive spoke reflectors that (if they arrive tomorrow) I will have available to hand out on Sunday to those interested (but there are additional reflectors the law says are required). You can have a look here at what the law says is required when cycling in Quebec. MEC and Bushtukah have cheap reflectors in stock when I looked last evening; it might be worth stopping by tonight or tomorrow.
Bonne route!
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Sorry, registration closed.
Available Rides
A (113 km, 1035 m elevation gain)
You're trading flatter-longer for shorter-steeper today, on a new route that takes you east to Buckgham. The new roads I've investigated through Streetview, alone, but the pavement looks decent if cracked. Please let me know your thoughts on the route. It's easy to add or remove a few kms, particularly in the Gats. Once back in Gatineau, the route follows pathways which can easily be substituted with roads.
Be aware of 1km on QC-366 at km 86.5 that will likely be quite busy. Shoulders appear to be gravel.
There are four obvious rest stops -- Chelsea, Perkins, Buckingham, Gatineau (on the return from the country). Have a look on the map to see where promising stops are.
B (98 km, 798 m elevation gain)
You're getting extra elevation, today, on a new route that takes you east to Buckgham. The new roads I've investigated through Streetview, alone, but the pavement looks decent if cracked. Please let me know your thoughts on the route.
Be aware of 1km on QC-366 at km 71 that will likely be quite busy. Shoulders appear to be gravel but you may wish to use them.
There are three obvious rest stops -- Perkins, Buckingham, Gatineau (on the return from the country). Have a look on the map to see where promising stops are: look for the "food" points-of-interest on the map.
C (65 km, 580 m elevation gain)
It's a long way to go for a dougnut, but you are heading to Perkins on a mix of pathways, residential streets, wider roads. Some streets could be in Kanata, but others -- 10km each side of Perkins, including the delightful ch Fogarty; the pathway along the river -- are very scenic and make the ride very much worthwhile.
The distance is shorter this week but you have more climbing, particularly the 8km or so after the doughnut break in Perkins (km 31). There is a second opportunity for a break at km 46.5, if desired.
D (48 km, 307 m elevation gain)
This week's ride is newly drawn and takes you away from the Gatineau Park to get a small taste of what lies north of Gatineau proper. Maybe pique your curiosity about what lies even further beyond. There are a lot of paved pathways on the route, and you spend a fair amount of the ride in urban spaces but also several kms along the Ottawa river pathways Sadly, you are penalized by fewer kms this week, but more than compensated by a fair dinkum elevation gain! Slow and steady will get you there; remember, what goes up will have more fun coming down.
Please have a good preview of the route to see where you will transition between road and path. A very suburban rest stop is at about km 29.5: Timmy's, McDonald's, IGA.
