Sunday Ride 25-07-06 - Airport NRC
Upcoming Club Events:
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Please take a look in club calendar to see what upcoming events you may wish to take part in. There is something going on almost every day.
Are you interested in having GPS voice navigation on your group rides?
If you want to keep track of your rides, as you go, join the exciting world of being told where to go by an ethereal voice!
Every OBC member is entitled to use the Ride With GPS tool, at no cost, for any route that is found in the OBC's RWGPS route library. (Whether or not you are on a club ride).
Access this document to get specific instructions on how.
REMINDERS FOR RIDERS:
Group ride participants must have previously attended an OBC Group Riding Clinic (GRC).
Check the calendar to see when the next GRC is scheduled.
Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to other road users.
Restaurant/ Toilet Etiquette Reminder:
Problem: a lack of public washrooms on our Sunday routes around Ottawa, combined with small personal holding tanks.
Solution: shrubbery, camouflaged kit, private washrooms or a complete and unwelcome lack of inhibition!
Commentary: Generally, in my experience, stores DO NOT offer customers the use of a washroom. Some larger supermarkets do. Restaurants and some other enterprises do welcome use of their washroom -- e.g. in a restaurant, a gas station -- on a quid pro quo basis; that is, if you want to use the washroom, you buy something. Rare is the proprietor who says, "sure, come on in" without expecting a purchase. It is not a good look if a group of ten cyclists shows up, uses the toilet, and leaves without a few token purchases from amongst the recently relieved.
Something to keep in mind.

Description : Road Ride
Start Location : NRC Airport - Flight Pvt & Levy Pvt
Start Time : 8:00 AM Departure - gather 7:30 -- 7:45
Weather: note the serious showers are forecast for late afternoon. The morning is looking good!
Things are heating up for the Dog Days. Be sure to think more about keeping yourself cool and hydrated, and be thinking about how you can keep yourself fed and watered on your ride. Please also keep an eye on the others in your group to make sure no one is looking overheated and about to ride into the ditch.
Back to the airport this week for a selection of rides to the south and southeast.
If you sign up, please review the route beforehand you go ride.
Bonne route!
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Sorry, registration closed.
Available Rides
A (129 km, 640 m elevation gain)
A few new turns on a known route. The CCW circulation is new and I'd like to hear how the last 10 km is at that time of day. Note that there is a detour drawn into the route for the stop in Osgoode. The detour can be entirely avoided by continuing straight on Nixon. Food and or toilet is Osgoode (Red Dot Cafe has been advised some cyclists may drop in); Halville; Winchester, Metcalfe.
B (102 km, 393 m elevation gain)
A CW loop to Embrun. Watch for busy road at left turn near km 28; in Embrun, the food is about 1km off piste to the west at km 49; next food stop is at km 74, The Stable resto. There may or may not be toilet facilities in the Greely park at km 83. I've drawn a detour with a few kms of rail trail, as a relaxing break from the pavement, at km 88.6. If it is a hot day, the shade on the trail may be welcome. The alternative is to turn right on Manotick Stn Rd, then ride past the mansions on Pebblewoods Dr. Ride leader's choice; check with your group!
C (73 km, 380 m elevation gain)
Something new for the C route: 13km of the often-shaded and cooler Osgoode Link rail trail on the return. Rest stops at the Stable resto in Metcalfe and/or in Osgoode (Red Dot Cafe has been advised some cyclists may drop in).
D (54 km, 257 m elevation gain)
A big clockwise loop, east to Farmers Way then west along Parkway Rd to a rest & watering stop at the "mall" in Greely. There may or may not be toilet facilities in the Greely park on the left of Parkway Rd shortly before the mall.
