Sunday Ride 25-07-13 - Orleans

Upcoming Club Events:

Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.

Please take a look in club calendar to see what upcoming events you may wish to take part in. There is something going on almost every day, and new, recurring activities are still coming on-line for the season.

Are you interested in having GPS voice navigation on your group rides?

If you want to keep track of your rides, as you go, join the exciting world of being told where to go by an ethereal voice!

Every OBC member is entitled to use the Ride With GPS tool, at no cost, for any route that is found in the OBC's RWGPS route library. (Whether or not you are on a club ride).

Access this document to get specific instructions on how.

REMINDERS FOR RIDERS:

Group ride participants must have previously attended an OBC Group Riding Clinic (GRC).

Check the calendar to see when the next GRC is scheduled.

Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to other road users.

Sunday Ride

NOTE: you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.

NOTE: Because we are all headed across the river to Quebec, once again, I will bring the bike reflectors leftover from the distribution at the Moussette Park departure last month (to get your rides "legal"). Arrive early if you need them. Backstory: there was a report from the Chelseaa area, two months back, that daytime cyclists were ticketed for lacking proper reflectors; such ticketing is rare, to my knowledge, but it is easy to protect against it.

https://saaq.gouv.qc.ca/en/road-safety/modes-transportation/bicycle/accessories

There's no cost for the reflectors (spoke; reflective tape for everything else) but, in the spirit of Bernie Sanders, I am accepting donations of less than a loonie to offset my cost. No corporate donations accepted! :)

Description : Road Ride

Start Location : Orleans, Millennium Park 'n' Ride

Start Time : 8:00 AM Departure - gather 7:30 -- 7:45

NOTE AFFECTING A, C, D rides: The duration of the construction detour at Filion Rd and Baseline Rd, south of Rockland, appears to have been extended. So, the routes below include the detour.

KRIKEY! Another construction detour in Rockland as of July 10th. A, C & D routes have been updated (the same files and URLs as listed on the event page). On the plus side, the new detour takes you right past the Tim Horton's.

NOTE AFFECTING ALL RIDES: When you get off the return ferry, in Cumberland, you may find some road construction on Cameron St. It's not much; worst case, walk the one block of construction from the 174 to Old Montreal Rd.

NOTE: FOR FERRIES

A RIDERS BRING 1 x $2.00 + 1 x $3.00 = $5.00

B, C, D RIDERS BRING 2 x $2.00 = $4.00

PLEASE BRING COINS; it's much simpler

This week we head across the river into Quebec (Remember: single-file only). Your choice to either swim the river, twice -- no charge -- or take two ferries. Each of the two ferries costs $2.00 per bike/rider EXCEPT Montebello ferry is $3.00.

There are numerous roads in Quebec that are quite scenic and not too busy. There are hills (make note of how much climbing you'll be doing) on several routes (not so much today's D route). The A ride also travels the very scenic and calm riverside road east to Lefaivre.

A gentle reminder: when you sign up for a distance and speed, please be 99% confident that you will be able to meet the mark and stay with the group. If your confidence is below 99%, please select a less challenging ride. We are a "no drop" club, but that policy works well only when riders realize their capacity and all groups are able to have a good ride, within the advertised parameters.

The only real variation on this, that I can think of, might be if you are intentionally challenging your personal limits and have agreed with the group that you will accept being dropped and see yourself home if you aren't able to keep up. This sort of thing is really only a consideration for advanced riders and is exceptional.

Note, too, that if you aren't feeling great when you show up the morning of, you can change to a less taxing group; that's not a problem.

Bonne route!

*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.

Please contact the organizer if you have questions.
Registration closes July 12, 5:00 PM.

Available Rides

A (123 km, 677 m elevation gain)

A good counter-clockwise loop, eastbound on the Ontario side to Lefaivre, then cross the river to Montebello and return on the 148. It's a very pleasant and scenic, not usually busy at all ride east on the Ontario side; the 148 will be busier.

A new route has been created to include a necessary detour. It's all good but note the km or so on David Street, exiting Rockland, is strewn with potholes; be very attentive.

$3.00 for the Montebello ferry.

$2.00 for the return ferry.

On the 148, do watch out for uneven pavement on the shoulder. You should not have to worry about shrubbery shadows on the pavement when heading west.

An easy 6km can be added at km 41.8 by continuing on Old Montreal Rd to Plantagenet -- stop for tea or gelato, if you like, by the river -- then continuing past and crossing hwy 17 a second time onto Cty Rd 9 north to the river to rejoin the route.

There's a depanneur in Lefaivre (no intel on it). Montebello has lots of cafes on the hwy through town. Papineauville km75 has a Timmy's at the west end. Thurso has Subway, ice cream, Metro. Note there is a portapotty in Rockland along the detour.

B (95 km, 586 m elevation gain)

An extended loop on the Ontario side awaits before boarding the ferry. Save some energy for the climbing, mostly on the Quebec side, where you'll climb up to find a pleasant country road heading west before starting a long descent back to the river for the return crossing. Be sure to hop onto the pathway upon exiting Buckingham; it avoids a nasty stretch of very busy hwy.

You have 3 obvious spots to stop (preview in RWGPS): Bourget (36km) food store; Thurso (km 58); Buckingham (km 77.5).

C (71 km, 548 m elevation gain)

This route, or variations of it, has become a bit of a classic over the last two years. The biggest single climb is after the arrival of the Ferry in Thurso, but it's not bad. The climb is followed by a very pleasant country road over rolling hills. Once that's done, it's almost literally 14km downhill to the second ferry.

A new route has been created to include a necessary detour. It's all good but note the km or so on David Street, exiting Rockland, is strewn with potholes; be very attentive.

Two obvious places to take a break. In Thurso and/or in Buckingham. Take a look at the map for the locations. Ice cream, Subway and grocery store are found in both locales. Note there is a portapotty in Rockland along the detour.

D (61 km, 394 m elevation gain)

A pleasant ride along Wilhaven Dr starts you heading east. On the Quebec side, you follow the 148, which has a good shoulder; just be watchful for any dips/ holes in the pavement. Also note the routing necessary to turn off of the 148 to head south to the return ferry.

A new route has been created to include a necessary detour. It's all good but note the km or so on David Street, exiting Rockland, is strewn with potholes; be very attentive. Watch also for two substantial downhills.

One obvious place to take a break - in Thurso. Take a look at the map for the locations. Ice cream, Subway and grocery store are all nearby each other. Note there is a portapotty in Rockland along the detour.
