Sunday Ride 25-08-03 - Andrew Haydon Park
Sunday Ride
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Description : Road Ride
Start Location : Andrew Haydon Park
Start Time : 8:00 AM Departure - gather 7:30 -- 7:45 (you might be self-launching)
NOTE RE IRONMAN CANADA: I knew there was another reason to be on the NOTL tour this weekend!
Summary: there's no reason to think there will be any concerns for the ride caused by the triathlon, once you are at Andrew Haydon Park. Choose wisely your route to get there, however (simple to do). See the following.
For those of you not participating in this grandaddy of triathlon, please note that:
1. The tri begins at Britannia beach -- about 2km east of Andrew Haydon -- with the swim. The gun sounds at 6:00AM.
2. If you are cycling to Andrew Haydon from the east. A quick web search suggests the fastest swimmers will take about 1h10 to complete the circuit. So, from about 07:10, you can reasonably expect the bike path road crossing, by the Ron Kolbus pavilion, will be marshalled and crossings prevented while competitors are passing through as they start the bike ride. There is no indication, however, that the bike path through Britannia will be closed. So, if you are cycling to Andrew Haydon Park along the bike path through Britannia, just be aware that you may be stopped for a few minutes and give yourself extra time.
3. If you are driving to Andrew Haydon Park, stay off of Carling avenue between, say, Woodroffe and Bayshore Dr; the bike segment goes up the hill from Britannia Beach and turns east onto Carling down to Lincoln Fields, where it turns left down to the Kitchi Zibi Mekan. Take the Queensway. You might be fine taking the Bayshore exit but, to be extra safe, you may want to continue to the Moodie exit northbound, then an immediate right onto Corkstown Rd which, when it intersects Carling Ave, will deliver you right back to Andrew Haydon Park.
4. I can't imagine that there will be too much spectator traffic at the 6:00AM start but, should our usual Andrew Haydon parking lots fill, remember that there is more parking by turning left off of Carling upon entering the park, and also the large lot at the other (west) end of the park by the sailing club. https://maps.app.goo.gl/KtEmRJu36Rr88Zp88
5. Regardless of where you park, we will still meet, with bicycles, in the usual parking lot.

Welcome to August.
I'll see what I can come up with as we launch a new rep from Andrew Haydon.
First item of note is that the work to remove the railway overpass on Carling continues, so you will likely encounter a need to detour around the site via the paths. I've included the detour in all the affected routes.
For the Dauntless D's, and the Curious C's, you get a picnic outing -- if you wish to fill your pockets or bags or what-have-you -- at Pinhey's Point Historic Site. Heck if it's a warm day, there's even a small, pebble beach there to cool off at. No expectation that the group will stay any longer than a usual pit stop but, if it's only a load of laundry waiting for you to return from the ride....?
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Sorry, registration closed.
Available Rides
A (132 km, 819 m elevation gain)
CCW loop through Blakeney - bridge is finished - to Clayton and return through Ashton and Fernbank.
B (94 km, 502 m elevation gain)
Heading WSW this time, on the classic, scenic loop to Ashton. Remember, there are about 4km of packed dirt/gravel. On the return through Stittsville, you can certainly feel free to skip the detour into the coffee shop and just continue the long downhill on Fernbank. For added pleasure, this route goes over the Corkstown hill on the way to Kanata, saving you from the hassle of the onerous detour around the Carling road work! 😉
C (67 km, 451 m elevation gain)
Join the D's at Pinhey's Point for a second breakfast. You'll be only a third into your ride but bring along some Longbottom Leaf and enjoy the morning. After a pause at the beach, you get the Thomas Dolan downhill and the Carp Ridge uphill. It all evens out. Refreshment in Carp.
D (55 km, 320 m elevation gain)
Staying away from Carp, today, and remaining east of the Carp ridge. It's time for a field trip. It's rare that the D's see this neck of the woods because it take a little longer to get to a cafe, and there's a hill.
The ride takes you to the Pinhey's Point historic site. Have a look around. Make use of the toilets. Enjoy the beach and the water. Maybe decide not to go home! Pack a snack to enjoy.
I've routed the return past both Tim Horton's and La Maison du Kouign-Amann, in Kanata, as break options. You decide. See the map in your browsere to see where they are. Or pick something else.
