Sunday Ride 26-06-14 - Gatineau (Lac des Fées) (cancelled)
🌅 SundayAbout the event
Event Cancelled
This event was cancelled on June 13, 2026 at 5:29 PM.
Reason:
Sorry folks, but the weather is not cooperating for tomorrow. Even the ducks will be hiding from the forecast rain and thunderstorms. Fingers crossed for good weather next Sunday.
Upcoming Club Events:
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Of note, the out-of-town tours. A very enjoyable way to venture farther afield for a couple or a few days of riding in new territory and other explorations. Have a look and contact the organizers, or ask other riders who have been-there-and-done-that and plan to do it again, to find out more.
Please take a look in club calendar to see what upcoming events you may wish to take part in. There is something going on almost every day, and new, recurring activities are still coming on-line for the season.
Are you interested in having GPS voice navigation on your group rides?
If you want to keep track of your rides, as you go, join the exciting world of being told where to go by an ethereal voice!
Every OBC member is entitled to use the Ride With GPS tool, at no cost, for any route that is found in the OBC's RWGPS route library. (Whether or not you are on a club ride).
Access this document to get specific instructions on how.
REMINDERS FOR RIDERS:
Group ride participants must have previously attended an OBC Group Riding Clinic (GRC).
Check the calendar to see when the next GRC is scheduled.
Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to other road users.
Sunday Ride
Cycling etiquette in Gatineau Park: the park management has asked cycling groups to pay closer attention to the (Quebec) rules of the road, and generally adhere to responsible riding behaviour when in the park. Consequently, where I've previously said that riding two-up when the parkways are closed to cars is likely OK, I would ask that, from now on, ride leaders ensure your groups stay single-file on the parkways, even when they are closed to vehicles.
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Description : Road Ride
Start Location : Lac des Fées parking (near P3), GATINEAU
If you cycle to the start, here's a map of 2 likely routes to get there.
Start Time : 9:00 AM Departure - gather 8:30 -- 8:45
REMINDER: In Quebec, it is single-file only.
Heading, once more into the Quebec paysage. Hills for all, to varying degrees. And great scenery!
I encourage new members without much experience in hills -- perhaps a case of "Gats Anxiety" -- to join our D ride this week for a relaxed introduction to some hills and the lovely flats of the Chelsea-Wakefield rail trail. Worst case might be that you take an early coffee break in Chelsea.
Bonne route!
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Available rides
A (110 km, 1316 m elevation gain)
A new variation of hills in a relatively short ride. Easily extended and elevated by a longer stay in the park upon departure. Remember that vehicles will be on the parkways after noon. Watch for the (up) HILL just after the left turn off the 105, north of Wakefield at Alcove; for those not familiar with it: Surprise!
Almost forgot. There are about 4km of gravel, mixed packed and loose, on chemin Clark, north of Mont Cascades.
B (100 km, 786 m elevation gain)
Perkins-Buckingham-Chelsea. A very scenic ride. What more to say! Please preview the route and the points-of-interest to locate likely rest stops and the one very steep hill on the return. Hilly but rewarding and not too much traffic. Of course, there's chemin Fogarty to be enjoyed!
C (61 km, 561 m elevation gain)
A long way to go for a donut. But a pleasant, though hilly ride on some lovely Quebec country lanes. Take it easy and use your low gears to get you up the hills without wearing out your legs! Do use caution going down the long hill on Saint-Amour (km 38.5) because the bike lanes, for the 1.8km that I believe they exist, alternate from two lanes to one lane. Very odd. Watch, obviously, for bike traffic coming uphill! When the bike lanes end, you must safely transition into the vehicle lanes. Also, you have a long, fairly steep hill to descend at km 45. It's fun, but use care (this is the foreboding hill you see ahead as you ride north at km 9). Timmy's in Perkins is the usual spot for a break.
D (44 km, 506 m elevation gain)
New members, and those recovering from the weather you encountered this past weekend on the road to.from Kingston, are particularly invited to take this measured but very scenic ride about 1/2 way to Wakefield. This is a great way to introduce yourself to a sampling of the hills you'll encounter on the Quebec side, without the climb up to Pink Lake! Slow and steady. A great opportunity to learn how to use your many gears to keep your legs happy. At the turnaround point, you'll descend from route 105 (which has a good shoulder and a speed limit reduced to 50kmh) down to the gorgeous rail trail for a relaxed and flat return to Chelsea along the Gatineau River. From Chelsea, your likely rest stop, you enjoy the gentle hills back down to the start.
