June 6/7 - Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour

Last day for registration may have been May 10th. Contact the OBC office to verify.

Volunteer's sought and needed!!

Your club, and all the activities it organizes, run on volunteers and it needs us all to pitch in, whether a little or a lot; every hour helps.

Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour Whether your are planning to ride the tour or not, there are plenty of opportunities, either on the weekend or beforehand, to play a small (or large!) but vital role in making it successful. Many many many volunteers are needed. Please sign up. https://ottawabicycleclub.ca/rlct/

This & that

Keep an eye out for trash, rocks, sand, gravel, etc. on the roads, especially rounding corners.

On to the ride...

Event Description

Departing from Andrew Haydon Park to points west and northwest.

Note that I am extending the ride lengths due to training for the RLCT. I'm holding back D distances, somewhat, to bring our new members into the fold. You can remember when 40km was a daunting prospect!

Note also that I am adding extra speed ranges - slower and longer. That means there is an increased possibility that we won't have ride leaders for all; a bit of reorganizing might be needed on the day. Just something to be aware of and to keep in mind.

Some hills (a fair number, to be honesst) on roads that aren't overly busy and the scenery quite pleasant. Oftentimes, a tailwind pushes you home.

Start Location  : Andrew Haydon Park

Start Time         : 9:00 AM Departure - gather: 8:30 - 8:45

Bonne route!

Please contact the organizer if you have questions.

Sorry, registration closed.

Available rides

A (130 km, 797 m elevation gain)

This clockwise loop offers variety, and even includes a small, river-side country road once you are past Ashton on your way to Almonte. There are options for going off-piste, as desired. Once you are past Stittsville, food options are in Carlton Place (in a pinch, as you need to go off-piste to find food), Almonte -- primarily, Pakenham (again, off-piste, the 1840s Bakery: marked on the map), Kanata. Starting out from Andrew Haydon Park, the route is on roads but there are paths to follow, if desired, to Cedarview.

B (99 km, 563 m elevation gain)

A classic ride. A straight-forward and very pleasant jaunt in the country. Climbs are generally long and gentle -- there is a fair amount of climbing, FYI -- with quick descents, notably: on Thomas Dolan; the arrival in Fitzroy Harbour; and 2 of the loveliest kms around on Loggers Way into Kinburn. There's not much in the way of coffee stops: the general store in Fitzroy; the gas station in Kinburn. The first sit-down cafe is likely not until Carp (but there are picnic tables by the water in the provincial park -- great spot to eat a sandwich; possibly also across from the general store in Fitzroy Harbour). Comfort stops are few. The best option in Fitzroy is about 800m north of the store in the provincial park; see the RWGPS map. Ideally, drain your holding tank before setting out.

NOTE: at km 48.5, rather than turning left to go directly into the town, you can do a right/left into the park driveway and follow that all the way down to the parking lot near the beach. There are great toilets to be found there. And picnic tables. Cyclists do not need to pay the day-use fee. To get on your way, again, walk south from that gravel parking lot to find the path through the fence onto the pavement of Kedey St. (See the map)

C (81 km, 466 m elevation gain)

Stretching our distances a little more in prep for the RLCT. Another classic ride, which was perhaps(?) the B ride a month ago.

FYI: There is 5km of somewhat packed gravel between Dwyer Hill Rd and Appletone Side Rd. It's a lovely ride and, for the most part, doesn't have much vehicle traffic. Lots of places to take a break on Almonte. The usual is Equator Coffee cuz it's the first place to stop on arrival. Stops also possible in Kanata, as needed.

D (43 km, 291 m elevation gain)

This is a repeat from a month ago, when it was cold and smart cyclists were still hibernating.

New members certainly welcome!

A simple ride for a coffee in Carp, and return. Choose a different route through Kanata, if you wish.
