4 weeks to Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour. Get out there!

Upcoming Club Events:

Starting this week, pretty much all weekly OBC ride series are now up and running.

Please take a look in the calendar to see all the upcoming events you may wish to take part in.

May 5 - Tuesday evening rides begin

May 5 - Women & Youth Time Trials begin

May 6 - RLCT Tips & Tricks - Bushtukah Westboro

May 7 - Open Time Trials start

May 15-18 (long weekend) - Northumberland out-of-town tour

The first-of-the-year multiday OBC outing, setting out on day rides from a base on the Lake Ontario shore in Cobourg. A variety of rides await, selected from these options, perhaps others. A very fun way to get your season underway and get to know, better, fellow club members, and enjoy new routes and a new part of the province, by bike. More info: https://ottawabicycleclub.ca/tours/

June 6/7 - RLCT

Book your place soon! Last day for registration is May 10th. Remaining space is limited.

Volunteer's sought and needed!!

Your club, and all the activities it organizes, run on volunteers and it needs us all to pitch in, whether a little or a lot; every hour helps.

Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour Whether your are planning to ride the tour or not, there are plenty of opportunities, either on the weekend or beforehand, to play a small (or large!) but vital role in making it successful. Many many many volunteers are needed. Please sign up. https://ottawabicycleclub.ca/rlct/

This & that

Is your bike ship-shape? Are you carrying basic tools and equipment? Be sure all the critical components -- brakes, drive train; tires -- are in good shape and thus ensure that your bike won't be inclined to leave you in tears at the side of the road. On all club rides (in fact, whenever you ride), please carry, minimally, a spare tube, tire levers, air pump (or equivalents for tubeless). Having bright, day-time running lights (front & back) is also a really good idea to improve your visibility to drivers.

Keep an eye out for trash, rocks, sand, gravel, etc. on the roads, especially rounding corners.

The east-end roads were in pretty good shape, yesterday (Apr 26) but do keep an eye out for debris on the roads and in the corners.

On to the ride...

NOTE: If you see a ride of a good distance for you but not a good speed, let me know so that I can consider adding it. In preparation for the RLCT, some riders may be wanting longer rides but at more relaxed speeds.

Event Description

South & southwest from the Nepean Sportsplex.

Start Location  : Nepean Sportplex

Start Time         : 9:00 AM Departure (we ride at nine!) - gather: 8:30 - 8:45

Public Service Announcement: A early-season reminder that it is not really great form for a group to stop to use the toilet at a restaurant without a couple of members buying something. Also, bringing your own food into a restaurant is likely going to invite an unpleasant reaction.

Bonne route!

Please contact the organizer if you have questions.

Sorry, registration closed.

Available rides

A (122 km, 455 m elevation gain)

A strange figure 8, with the crossover point on Roger Stevens Drive. Some very pleasant new segments in the Kemptville area. Various places to stop for coffee and comfort. There's a bakery on the route in Kemptville.

Registration details are no longer available for this event.

B (92 km, 538 m elevation gain)

Head south, almost to Kemptville, then loop clockwise and return through Richmond and Stittsville. Suggest coffee and comfort at the Ultramar on Roger Stevens and/or later in Richmond. There's not much between those spots. Rideau River Provincial Park, at km 39.5, has toilets and water. I am unsure if cyclists are charged a day-use fee. The park opens for the season on May 8.

Registration details are no longer available for this event.

C (76 km, 440 m elevation gain)

(EDIT MAY 5: created a new route to remove Borrisokane Rd) A counter-clockwise loop. While the As and Bs head south, Cs and Ds head west & south. A simple loop out past Stittsville, then some lovely roads back to your coffee and comfort stop in Richmond (at least 3 cafe options). Loop around through Manotick (more coffee?) before returning to the start.

Registration details are no longer available for this event.

D (41 km, 281 m elevation gain)

This is new and still short to bring new members into the fold. It's also a repeat of the last start from the Sportsplex because there were only 3 people on that chilly day.

A simple route through a fancy, rural subdivision before heading to Manotick for coffee. Note the short section of pathway at km 18.7.

Choose either refreshment stop: Tim Hortons or the upscale Morning Owl. Ride leader will want to decide which before turning north on River Road and coming up to Mitch Owens.

Ride leaders will also want to be ready -- i.e. prime your riders -- for left turns off of Longfields (km 8) and from River Rd onto Bridge St (potentially, km 26) and onto Earl Armstrong (km 33.25).

Registration details are no longer available for this event.
