Sunday Ride 25-08-24 Nepean Sportsplex
More speed options
There has been a call for speed ranges outside the norm. We'll experiment a little with this. Note that if riders are spread too thin in several tiny groups, it may make sense to combine some groups together on the day. So, sign up for what you prefer but be open to shifting if a critical mass of like-minded riders doesn't materialize.
A quick reminder for riders
The Fall road construction season is upon us. I mention this, now, because there is culvert work soon to commence (this week? next week?) on William McEwen Dr which a couple of rides are routed along this week. (The city advisory page says that cyclists will be able to navigate through the construction)
Try as I might to stay on top of construction when planning routes -- with a little help from you folks who send me helpful notes -- your group may come across something that I missed.
First observation: it is rare to come across a construction zone -- even culvert replacements, which are all the rage right now -- that you are not able to walk or carry your bike across (I think I have come across just one in my 10+ years of Sunday rides); so, don't turn around when you see something in the distance on the road ahead. Be sure to cycle right up and check it out.
Second, if you can't get past the construction, then you and your group will need to make a decision as to how to modify your route. No worries, you'll figure it out by consulting a map.
Sunday Ride
Please note that you must be a current OBC member to participate in any events.
Description : Road Ride
Start Location : Nepean Sportsplex
Start Time : 8:00 AM Departure - gather 7:30 -- 7:45
Heading south, and west, as usual from the Sportsplex. Keep an eye out for construction; it seems that it is picking up to get done before that other, white season hits us.
*Group composition will depend on having a Ride Leader, and interest for specific Distance/Speed combinations, as determined by who shows up at the start point.
Sorry, registration closed.
Available Rides
A (133 km, 448 m elevation gain)
Heading south and looping around Kemptville. Some overlap with the recent airport ride, perhaps, on the return. Break is at Turcotte's General Store at km75 (snacks and toilet). And wherever else you can find: e.g. Kars Ultramar; Hallville (no toilets, unless you're a Tart-Maker Whisperer, perhaps?).
B (99 km, 499 m elevation gain)
Head south to loop around Osgoode before crossing the river, taking a brake at the Kars Ultramar, then looping south again to the river before turning north on McCordick Rd. Transit Barrhaven on the return. Off-piste (i.e. add kms) stops in Osgoode, Richmond, or Barrhaven. Be aware: no facilities on the drawn route between the Ultramar and Barrhaven. Also note the turn off of Borrisokane comes earlier due to construction on Cambrian Rd. You get to see a new part of Barrhaven; how cool is that!
C (75 km, 421 m elevation gain)
Changing things up, today, and sending you clockwise around a loop to Stittsville. Less work for me and everything looks new to you going the other direction!
A couple fo things to watch for include a turn off of Cambrian in Barrhaven due to construction on Cambrian approaching Borrisokane; I think they're putting in another roundabout at that intersection. Check out some new suburban streets. Also, you may encounter construction on William McEwen Dr approacing Brophy Dr. The city website says that, if construction has in fact begun, it will remain passable to cyclists. Bonne chance!
Coffee stop is likely Richmond and/or Stittsville. You choose.
D (59 km, 316 m elevation gain)
Head south to Strandherd to cross the river -- LEADER: if, immediately after crossing the bridge, River Rd southbound is re-opened, feel free to take it -- then cross, again, into Manotick. Don't even think it's time for coffee! Carry on through Hamburger Heights to get to First Line, then Century Rd to get to Richmond. I'm going to lead you to Tim's, so if you know of a better coffee place...
From Richmond, head east on Barnsdale and Borrisokane but, turn off on an earlier street to avoid construction on Cambrian Rd. Then it's a turn here, a turn there over to Longfields Dr and the usual route back to the barn.
